Mt Gambier’s Umpherston Sinkhole
Mount Gambier’s Umpherston Sinkhole was once a great limestone cave that has since collapsed onto itself forming the now-famous “Sunken Garden”.
The Sinkhole is open 24 hours 7 days a week and is famous for its beautiful hanging garden and its large colony of possums that come out in the evening to feed on fresh fruit given by locals and tourists.
The best times to photograph the sinkhole is in the morning and in the afternoon, this allows for better lighting.
The possums appear for feeding around sunset and into the start of the night
Umpherston Sinkhole is free to enter and no reservation or booking needs to be made to take photos at the Sinkhole.
The Sinkhole is listed on Snap a Space as a free area for photographers to explore and enjoy.
